IDAE will offer a new consultancy service for feasibility studies for biogas projects

Intended for generators of biodegradable waste capable of energy recovery for self-consumption or use in nearby environments.

It will make it easier for companies and municipalities to make decisions about the use and energy transformation of their bio-waste.

The Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO), through the Institute for Diversification and Energy Saving (IDAE), will offer technical feasibility studies on possible biogas utilization projects for thermal and/or electrical self-consumption. The perfectibility analyzes will be free for the beneficiaries, who must be generators of biodegradable waste capable of energy recovery or conversion into renewable energy in the form of gas as a result of their industrial, agro-livestock or agri-food activity, among others .

This technical assistance service – a kind of tailor-made consultancy – will help companies and local entities to make strategic decisions based on reliable and independent data on whether or not to undertake this type of project and its economic potential. The initiative, financed with 1.43 million euros from the IDAE, meets the objectives set by the Government in the Biogas Roadmap and aligns with the forecast established in the updated draft of the PNIEC (2023-2030 ).

Public bidding and phased execution.

The aid is directed to industries that generate biodegradable waste, such as farms and agri-food industries, interested in knowing the treatment potential, the energy recovery and the functioning and production capacity of the aforementioned substrate.

To ensure the necessary means to speed up the completion of the studies, the IDAE, dependent on the Secretary of State for Energy, has completed a public tender process for the selection of the company executing these studies.

The studies will facilitate a preliminary assessment of the available technical solutions and the economic returns, so that companies or promoting administrations can count on a solid basis for making decisions. The analyzes will be done in phases, sequentially. Depending on the results obtained, the IDAE will decide on the continuation with the other phases of the process. The studies with a thermal/electrical purpose will also include laboratory tests and different tests for the physicochemical characterization of the substrates.

Applicants for perfection studies must also sign a declaration with the IDAE expressing their interest and willingness to implement the project if it is viable.
