It is no coincidence that the coexistence between Chemistry and Tourism in the Camp de Tarragona has become a model of success. The recent ruling of the TSJC on the Recreational and Tourist Center (CRT) has been able to convey the false perception that they are incompatible sectors, but experience shows that this is not the case at all.
The Master Plan for the Chemical Industry and Tourism of the Camp de Tarragona, in which in 2003 the Administration and the two sectors laid the foundations for the management and growth of both activities, has proved to be a a useful and profitable tool, which has allowed the parallel development of both - and of the territory in general - to become a reference everywhere.
And we don't say it as a cliché: it really is a reference, insofar as other territories have often been interested in how two very different industries have been achieved here - and among which one could even see them. , hastily, incompatibility- operate a few meters not only without interference but even cooperating and empowering each other.
But the success does not only lie in having lived in harmony: in addition, this model for the territory, this dual commitment, is a strategic success, because both sectors are complementary and diverse, and consequently endow our economy with versatility and solidity. It is becoming clear in the difficult times we are going through, and unfortunately they have had especially harmful effects on sectors such as tourism.
Obviously, the chemical industry has also been affected by the crisis, but at least so far, not as sharply as most sectors. In addition, this time has made it possible to assert its social contribution: with flexibility and the solidarity of its teams, the Chemistry has guaranteed essential supplies for society during the worst moments of the pandemic.
All in all, because for decades they have coexisted and grown in parallel not only without interference but even with synergies; because they are complementary and therefore help and compensate in times of difficulty; and above all because both are agents committed to the territory, to its prosperity and to the well-being of the people who live in it; we are convinced of the full validity of the model.
With the commitment, because we are obliged to do so, to continue looking for and promoting synergies that respond to new challenges such as the energy transition or the circularity of the economy. But there is no doubt that ours is a model of present and future. Not only because in this rich territory there is room for both activities, but above all because both, Chemistry and Tourism, are necessary and we contribute, each from its field, to make a better Camp de Tarragona.
