October 21 is World Energy Saving Day, a good opportunity to raise awareness and sensitize citizens and energy consuming companies of their key role in achieving a clean, distributed and democratic energy model. Given the declared climate emergency in Catalonia, we must clearly position ourselves in favor of an energy transition towards a renewable energy model by 2050. To achieve this goal, the participation and co-responsibility of society is essential.
We must begin to encourage this responsible use and take into account the harm that fossil fuels do, as:
- Its consumption is very expensive.
- They are highly polluting.
- They are harmful to people's health.
- Being harmful materials, they alter climate change.
Therefore, it is essential to learn to change our habits to use less energy and raise awareness about the benefits of rational energy use.
Tips to save energy
- Raise the blinds and open the curtains to make the most of the daylight.
- Do not leave lights on in rooms or unoccupied areas.
- Turn off conventional fluorescents when you need to be out of a room for more than 10 minutes.
- Use LED bulbs: with less power they make more light than conventional ones.
- Make rational use of computer and electronic devices, do not forget to turn them off when not in use and do not leave them on hold.
- Achieve good thermal insulation to prevent sunlight in summer (blinds, awnings) and heat loss in winter (good insulation on walls and ceilings, double glazing, curtains, etc.).
- Keep the thermostat at a suitable temperature (21º C in winter and a maximum of 26º C in summer).
- It uses category A appliances (the most efficient in saving water and electricity).
- Do not use the oven or microwave to defrost and remove food from the freezer in advance and thaw it in the refrigerator.
- Prioritize public transportation over private transportation.
