CETIT presents you with a chance to collaborate on research against illness via the Internet

This is a system facilitated by IBM that has been proposed by one of our colleagues, Josep Lluís Reina, as news of social interest.

World Community Grid is a worldwide project, announced in 2004, which uses the unused capacity of personal computers of individuals and companies to create a global network that allows addressing with great power of calculation the research of diseases, natural disasters and environmental problems

World Community Grid is based on the Grid or Distributed Computing network technology that consists of the Internet connection of thousands or millions of personal computers to create a "virtual system" of great capacity that will solve the enormous demand of the Internet. storage and data process that the research is currently generating.

Any computer user with an Internet connection can participate, on a voluntary basis, by downloading a free software and registering in the web environment www.worldcommunitygrid.org

It works in the following way: When the computer is not 100% using its process capacity, it will request data from the World Community Grid server. The computer will perform operations with this data, send the results to the server and request new data to continue working. With this simple procedure, users will be giving the network the underused capacity of their computers for the development of the research. Users suffer no inconvenience, nor do they perceive any interference in the development of their daily activities.

It is estimated that there are over 650 million personal computers worldwide. Each one of them is a potential participant in the "World Community Grid". IBM has donated hardware, software and technical services to create the technological infrastructure that this initiative needs. In addition, it provides hosting, maintenance and technical support services. The projects are selected by an advisory committee, which will evaluate the proposals of scientific entities and non-profit organizations. The committee is made up of representatives of prestigious institutions such as the University of Oxford or the World Health Organization, among others.

World Community Grid is designed to collaborate on humanitarian aid of a global nature such as research into infectious diseases, the genome and associated diseases, but also for the study of natural disasters, the fight against hunger in the world or astronomical research

Here is a detailed description that has been sent to us by our colleague, Josep Lluís Reina, on how to access them: "Once you're on the main page of" The World Community Grid ", you can read (in English or French) If you agree you can download the program to your PC (it is completely confidential and reliable, it has no virus, no spam, no spyware or antipharming). It is then downloaded by clicking on "download now "or" télécharger maintenant "if you prefer the French version. Then a new screen will open that will ask you if your Operating System is Windows or Linux. If it is Windows, click on" download windows ", then" download file " and "Run." Once you can register, join the "The World Community Grid".

As our colleague advises, in three years he is a contributor; It has never had any problems and the ability of the computer does not diminish or diminish. Finally, if you want to remove the program it is easy.
