The publication of the UNE-EN 14972-17:2026 standard marks a new step in the development of fire protection solutions in the residential sector, an environment that concentrates most of the victims in this type of accident.
The document establishes the fire resistance testing requirements for water mist systems applied to domestic and residential occupancies, such as homes, apartment buildings, care homes or small hotel establishments. Its scope of application covers buildings with ceilings up to 5.5 meters high, which allows it to cover a significant part of the built stock intended for residential use.
This standard has been developed within the CTN-UNE 23 Fire Safety technical committee.
The new regulations respond to the sector's need to have homogeneous criteria that allow the behavior of these systems to be rigorously evaluated in real fire conditions, given the growing prominence of solutions based on water mist due to their effectiveness and versatility in inhabited spaces.
Technical standards also maintain a close relationship with regulations, since their incorporation into regulatory frameworks allows for strengthening safety levels in buildings and advancing the development of public policies based on shared technical criteria.
