The Department of Climate Action, Food and Rural Agenda has launched the Biogas Strategy with the publication in the DOGC of the bases intended to subsidize the installations of biogas plants and treatment of the organic material obtained as a result of digestion anaerobic (digested). The general director of Agriculture and Livestock, Elisenda Guillaumes i Cullell, has explained in the framework of the Reindustrializem Catalunya Conference: qualitative balance of the PNI and future challenges", that the forecast is to call for aid for 23 million this 2024.
"The Government is working with the goal of multiplying by 3.5 the current production of biogas with 80 new installations to reach 150 in 2030, and reduce the emission of 350,000 tons of CO₂". The aim is to promote the sustainable use of livestock excrement and organic waste by obtaining biogas through anaerobic digestion, within the framework of the energy transition and the achievement of Catalonia's climate neutrality by 2050. "The measure is part of Catalonia's transition towards a new cleaner, sustainable, democratic and fair energy model," he added.
Right now there are 72 in operation, including landfills, treatment of sewage sludge, municipal and industrial organic waste, co-digestion and livestock excrement. These plants value organic materials to obtain biogas and use it to generate heat, electricity or biomethane, and also to obtain bio-fertilizer. Biogas, in addition to contributing to the goals of reducing emissions, is one of the important options to favor the penetration of renewable energies and the development of the circular economy.
In this sense, the Director General of Agriculture and Livestock has explained that the production of biogas through the anaerobic digestion of livestock droppings represents an impetus for the circular economy in the agricultural field, since it allows the energy recovery of the droppings and the agricultural use of digestate to fertilize the soil: "Biogas plants can offer energy in the environment where they are installed, either by producing electricity, heat or biomethane, they boost the economy, especially in rural areas, and they take advantage of the local renewable energy generation potential with energy efficiency criteria". "We want to turn Catalonia into a strategic point for the generation of biogas", concluded general manager Guillaumes.
