Catllar Castle stands on the remains of a fortified settlement from the Iron Age (7th-5th centuries BC) on a hill overlooking one of the meanders of the Gaià River. Although written documentation dates its beginnings to the 11th century, when the river was the border between the Catalan counties and the kingdom of Al-Andalus, archaeological excavations carried out indicate that the origins of the fortification date back to the Muslim era or even earlier. The structure that is currently observed is the result of its growth from an original wall and tower to which outbuildings were added mainly between the 13th and 16th centuries. In this last century is when the castle experienced its most notable growth, being configured as a building with a moat, with a triangular plan, a walled perimeter with two towers on the main facade and the interior articulated by a central courtyard. The lordship of the castle and town, which arose in its enclosure during the second half of the 12th century, remained in the hands of the Montoliu family until 1344, when it was acquired by Pere de Requesens. His son Berenguer sold it in 1351 to Bernat d'Olzinelles, treasurer and advisor to King Peter III the Ceremonious. Through the marriage of his granddaughter, it passed to the Queralt family, then to the Pallars family and finally to the Queralt family, who in 1599 would become counts of Santa Coloma. In 2002, the city council acquired ownership of the building, which had previously been privately owned, and began archaeological excavations of the interior and later its recovery and consolidation. This has allowed the recovery of a historic building that is emblematic of the town and has also allowed the castle to become the headquarters of the Baix Gaià Castle Interpretation Centre. The castle is also part of the Border Castles Route promoted by the General Directorate of Tourism of the Generalitat de Catalunya. The archaeological excavations carried out have documented the existence in the same place of Bronze and Iron Age settlements (8th-5th centuries BC) and a set of structures belonging to the castle, dated between the 9th and 18th centuries, which help to understand the architectural development of the fortification throughout the different historical periods. |
